Is Shiatsu For You?

Let me tell you a bit about Shiatsu. From the moment I discovered Shiatsu, it’s been blowing my mind with its power—not just to heal the body, but to transform the way we live, move, and feel. Not only is it a healing modality but it is a lifestyle as well, tuning into the seasons, the right foods for me to put into my body, movement, meditation and self-healing. I wish to share with you it’s wonders!
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a Japanese holistic bodywork that works on the energy pathways of the body. By applying pressure to the meridians and the points along them our ‘Qi’ or vital energy is allowed to flow freely where previously it may have been stagnant or stuck. This improves the flow and acts on the circulatory, nervous and muscular systems. It increases the body’s natural ability to heal and balance itself. The theory behind Shiatsu is Traditional Chinese Medicine and Five Element Theory, both have been collated and refined for over thousands of years. It is the same theory for Acupuncture and Qigong.
What Happens?
Through receiving Shiatsu a client will become more aware of their body, mind and spirit as a whole. We all have pain, tension or restricted movement in the body perhaps placed there by an emotional event. Shiatsu gives you the opportunity to release and soften - whether it be tension, headaches, pain, anxiety, depression, stress, high blood pressure, insomnia, digestive issues.
What To Expect
Shiatsu is given through clothing typically on a futon on the floor, but it can be on a massage couch or in a chair. As clothes don’t need to be removed and there are no oils involved it can be given anywhere but the Treatment Room at Sensate Spa and Studios is a wonderful, nurturing space to receive it.

You will feel pressure from palms, forearms, elbows or knees. There will be movement and stretches but also holding, whether with a palm or fingers or thumbs on points. And there will be stillness to drop into, to be present in the moment where the mind can be quiet and the magic of Shiatsu and Qi can happen.
You wouldn’t believe the number of clients that have big shifts in their life after receiving Shiatsu, or the ability to make a decision when they were stuck before.
It is a great therapy to have during and after times of change. For instance - when changing jobs, moving house, the breakdown of a relationship, and when grieving. Also during other life changes like the perimenopause/menopause, during and after pregnancy.
You may have heard of the saying – ‘Where intention goes, energy flows’. This is so appropriate for Shiatsu, by working together we can create balance and restore natural flow.
