Tending the Inner Fire: Awakening the Navel Centre in March

March is a month of thresholds.

We stand with one foot in winter and the other reaching toward spring. The days are slowly stretching, the light is returning, and yet the air still carries a lingering chill. It’s a season that invites both rest and renewal.

Energetically, this can feel like an in‑between place. We may sense the first stirrings of motivation, creativity, or outward movement, but the body can still feel heavy from winter’s long inward pull. The mind may be eager to surge ahead while our physical energy remains slow to catch up. This is the subtle terrain of transition, where the body lingers in winter while the spirit reaches toward spring.

The yogic tradition offers us a powerful resource for this very moment: the navel energy centre.

In the classical yogic traditions of India, this centre is known as Manipura — or more traditionally, Manipuraka chakra. The word mani means jewel, and puraka means city. “The city of jewels.” A beautiful image — suggesting that within us lies a radiant source of power, brilliance, and nourishment.

This same energetic reality is recognised in other traditions too. In the Tai Chi and Qi Gong systems, it is referred to as the lower dantian — sometimes poetically called the “golden stove.” Like a cooking stove, it is the place where raw ingredients are transformed into usable energy. It is where life is metabolised.

And this is exactly what the navel centre represents in yoga: our inner fire.

In Sanskrit, this fire is called agni. It governs digestion — not only of food, but of experience. Our ability to process what life brings us. Our capacity to transform heaviness into vitality. When our agni is strong, we feel clear, energised, and connected. When it is low, we may feel dull, stagnant, or overwhelmed.

Modern science offers an interesting parallel here. The gut is sometimes referred to as the “second brain.” It contains an extensive network of nerve endings and plays a crucial role in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin. Emerging research even explores the possibility of other powerful compounds being produced in this region. The wisdom traditions have long intuited what science is now beginning to articulate: the belly is a centre of intelligence.

At this time of year, reconnecting to this centre can be profoundly balancing.

Winter can draw our energy upward. We spend more time indoors, often in front of screens. The mind can become busy while the body becomes still. We may feel low in energy yet restless in thought. By bringing awareness back to the navel centre, we begin to ground ourselves. We move from overthinking to embodied presence.

In yoga, we cultivate this connection through specific practices. Breathwork is especially powerful.

Practices such as Agni Sara Kriya — which literally means “essence of fire”, gently stimulate the abdominal region, awaken the digestive fire, and build warmth from within. Variations of breath of fire and other pranayama techniques can also activate and energise this centre.

Asana can support this process too — twists, core work, and mindful strengthening around the belly all help to enliven the navel space. Also placing your awareness on this area of the boy in meditation is very powerful, as the maxim says, energy flows where attention goes. Even something as simple as placing a hand on the lower abdomen and breathing deeply into that area can begin to rekindle awareness.

The invitation this March is not to push harder or strive more. It is to tend the flame.

To remember that beneath the heaviness of winter, there is a steady warmth available. A jewel-like brilliance. A golden stove that can be gently stoked.

When we connect to the navel centre, we reconnect to our capacity to transform. To digest. To create energy from within rather than seeking it externally. We begin to feel more centred, less scattered. More embodied, less top heavy. More quietly powerful.

This is a beautiful time of year to nourish that connection.

Through breath. Through movement. Through awareness.

And in doing so, we allow our inner fire to carry us steadily toward the light of spring.

If you’d like to explore this more deeply, our teacher Tom offers classes where you can gently experience this connection for yourself, a welcoming space to awaken the navel centre through breath, movement, and steady inner listening.
