Small Changes, Big Difference

I don’t know about you but for me September feels more like an opportunity for a refresh than the dark depths of January. Perhaps we are all still programmed by our school years. Although I usually try to resist the urge to splurge on new stationery, I do embrace September as a chance for a reset.

One of the reasons I prefer September is that January New Year resolutions can feel overwhelming and daunting. We put too much pressure on ourselves and then can too often feel that we’ve ’failed’ when we’ve only just started.

Be kind to yourself

Instead of aiming for radical, overnight change perhaps we should be kinder to ourselves and aim for a more achievable and therefore sustainable approach?

In our busy, modern lives it can be difficult to find the time to prioritise our own health and fitness so it makes sense to start small and build on our progress.

“Change happens through movement and movement

Joseph Pilates

I found Pilates when my children were small. I hadn’t managed to find the time to exercise. After 3 pregnancies and running around after small children, I had lower back pain and felt generally pretty decrepit. I joined a Pilates class in a local church hall and found it really helped. I started feeling stronger, less stiff and more like myself.

What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact exercise method that enhances core strength, flexibility, posture, and body awareness. It was created in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German trainer who originally named it Contrology. Motivated by childhood illnesses like asthma and rickets, he developed the system as a path to personal health, drawing from disciplines such as anatomy, gymnastics, yoga, martial arts, and Zen philosophy.

The Benefits of Pilates

Pilates uses slow and controlled movements, this helps you to become more attuned to your body. With this increased body awareness you start to notice where you are holding tension and become aware of areas you need to strengthen. The precise movements and breathwork increase body awareness during the class and outside of the class too.
