Coming Home to Yourself Through The Principles of Myofascial Energetic Release

Listening to what your body has to say

"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." — Anaïs Nin

Introduction

Your body holds the story of your life—each strain, each emotion, each experience. This post introduces Myofascial Energetic Release (MER), a hands-on therapeutic approach that helps release deep tension and reconnect with your body's innate wisdom.

What is MER?

Myofascial Energetic Release (MER) focussing on releasing the fascia  in the body. Fascia is soft, connective tissue that surrounds every structure in the body (organs, muscles, bones, nerves and blood vessels). The myofascia surrounds the muscles.

The fascia holds the accumulation of all the ways in which life has impacted us, both physically and emotionally. This affects our posture, movement, breathing, digestive health and emotional wellbeing.

What I have observed during MER sessions

Clients are often surprised to notice where they hold emotions in their body. For example grief coming up when working around the jaw, or joy when working around the chest.

I have observed that this work sometimes puts people in touch with early childhood memories and brings helpful new perspectives and insights.

For each client their experience is completely unique. For many, expressing through sound and allowing the natural movements of the body during the session is very helpful. For some people their experience is more quiet, still and introspective.

Clients report dropping into very deep states of relaxation and often experience a sense of safety in their body.

Client feedback:

“MER helped shift some very stuck emotions. The last session I had such a cathartic cry which has since evicted looping thoughts from my head “ — Kerry

MER opened my awareness to deeply stored emotions that I was holding around my head and jaw” — Giacomo

The four main components of Myofascial Energetic Release

  1. Therapeutic touch

  2. Breathwork

  3. Movement

  4. Sound

Here are four ways to get some of the benefits of these sessions at home:

Therapeutic Touch:

When challenging emotions arise, taking a moment to notice where in your body you are experiencing these emotions can be really helpful e.g. grief in your chest or anxiety in your belly. Placing your hands on these  areas with presence and loving intention may be supportive. If time allows, using oil and doing some self massage can also be soothing.

Breath:

In difficult moments certain breathing techniques can really help to regulate the nervous system. During a MER session people are encouraged

to stay with a continuous breathing rhythm of a deep inhale through the

nose followed by a long slow exhale through the mouth. Practising this at home can be helpful in  finding a way through stressful moments.

Movement:

Dance can be great for releasing stuck emotions from the body. This could take the form of attending a movement class like Ecstatic Dance or 5 Rhythms. These spaces are valuable because solo, introspective experience is very welcome as well as dancing with others.  Putting your headphones on at home is also a great option, seeing how your body wants to move and noticing what feelings or sensations surface. Allowing your body to shake can be a simple and powerful way of letting stress move through, ‘literally shaking off what’s happened’

Sound:

Expressing through sound can be another way to release tension and adrenaline from the body. Humming, singing and sighing are all useful ways letting go and creating more space, ease and peace in the body.

We can learn a lot from how animals deal with stressful situations. They will often run around, shake and make sounds to release adrenaline from their bodies after a traumatic experience. As humans we allow stress to accumulate in our bodies and the above self care tips are ways to unlearn these lifelong habits.
