The Story Behind Sensate: Why Supporting Carers Matters So Much To Us

When people visit Sensate, they often comment on how calm it feels.
The peaceful garden, the warmth of the welcome, the opportunity to slow down for a while. What many people don't realise is that this feeling wasn't created by accident. It grew from something deeply personal of why wellbeing matters.
Today, Sensate is a hidden oasis in Bristol, a place where people come to reconnect with themselves, spend time in nature and find a moment of calm in a busy world. But the journey to create it was anything but ordinary.
What is now a thriving wellness sanctuary was once a neglected and forgotten space. Through hard work, creativity and a clear vision, founder Sarah Matthews transformed it into somewhere people could pause, breathe and feel restored.
If you'd like to learn more about that transformation, Bristol24/7 recently shared Sarah's story in their feature, "The Woman Who Transformed a Junkyard Into a Jungle of Wellness."Â It's a wonderful insight into the journey that helped shape Sensate and the values that continue to guide us today.
Every corner of Sensate reflects that journey. From the gardens and outdoor spa experience to the studio and treatment space, everything has been created with purpose: to offer people a chance to step away from everyday demands and prioritise their wellbeing.
A Personal Inspiration

Part of the story behind Sensate begins much earlier, in Sarah's own experience as a young carer.
Growing up with caring responsibilities taught her first-hand how easy it can be to put your own needs to one side.
When you're focused on looking after someone you love, rest, self-care and simple moments of joy can quickly disappear from your life.
As Sarah explains:
By 16, I had become what I can only describe as a ghost. All the care and attention was understandably focused on the person who was terminally ill, while I quietly carried the responsibility of holding everything together, knowing I would eventually lose the person I loved most.
That experience shaped who I am. It gave me resilience, determination and a deep understanding of how easily carers can lose themselves while caring for others.
Through Sensate: Time for Me, I want to give carers of all ages something I never had: a safe space to pause, restore their wellbeing and feel genuinely cared for. My hope for every carer that walks through the door is that they know they are seen, they are safe and they are held."
Those experiences became part of the foundation on which Sensate was built. Not just as a business, but as a place built on compassion, understanding and the belief that everyone deserves time to rest and recharge.
More Than A Spa

While Sarah's caring journey is an important part of the story, Sensate has always been about something bigger.
It's about creating a space where wellbeing feels accessible, welcoming and deeply human. A place where people can slow down, reconnect with nature, move their bodies, nurture their minds and take a break from the pressures of everyday life.
People arrive at Sensate for many different reasons. Some are looking for relaxation, others for movement, healing, connection or simply a quiet moment to themselves. Whatever brings them through the gate, our hope is that they leave feeling lighter than when they arrived.
Why Supporting Carers Matters
Sarah's story is personal, but it is far from unique.
Across the UK, an estimated 6.5 million people provide unpaid care for a family member, partner or friend, including around 800,000 young carers. Research also suggests that 72% of carers have experienced mental health challenges as a result of their caring responsibilities.
Behind every statistic is a real person.
A young person helping a parent before school.
Someone cancelling plans because they need to care for a loved one.
An adult carer who cannot remember the last time they did something purely for themselves.

Caring can be rewarding, meaningful and full of love, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Many carers put their own wellbeing on hold whilst focusing on the needs of others.
That reality remains one of the driving forces behind Sensate's growing commitment to supporting carers within our community.
Through our new initiative - Time for Me, we hope to create opportunities for carers of all ages to experience something many rarely prioritise for themselves: time to rest, reconnect, recharge and simply be cared for.
At Sensate, we believe carers deserve care too.
